RED Dragon or ARRI Alexa? Two industry standards in professional filmmaking with very different features. A technical and creative guide to help you make the right choice.

Why the choice of camera makes all the difference

A camera isn’t just a technical tool—it determines the final look of your production. At Bengale, we use the RED Dragon andARRI Alexa on a daily basis, and we guide our clients through this decision from the very start of the project. Here’s our honest comparison, based on years of hands-on experience.

RED Dragon: Digital Power

The RED Dragon records in 6K RAW with an extremely wide dynamic range. Its key features:

  • Ultra-high resolution ideal for cropping and visual effects
  • Very compact in its Dragon-X versions
  • Ideal for projects involving extensive post-production (VFX, 3D, advanced color grading)
  • More "digital," precise, and high-contrast

It excels at music videos with lots of special effects, live-action 3D, and large-scale productions on LED screens.

ARRI Alexa: the industry standard for film

The ARRI Alexa remains the gold standard for cinematographers in advertising and film. Why:

  • Organic, warm look, reminiscent of film
  • Unparalleled highlight management (no harsh overexposure)
  • Log C codec, highly flexible for color grading
  • Color science recognized by all color calibrators

It is the natural choice for luxury commercials, short films, and projects where image quality takes precedence over raw resolution.

Our recommendation

For a commercial or a luxury photoshoot: ARRI Alexa, without a doubt. For a music video with VFX, an LED event, or a project requiring heavy cropping: RED Dragon. For agile social media content : Sony FX9 or FX3, which are much lighter and quicker to set up.

The choice always depends on the desired look, the budget, and the shooting conditions. Our cinematographers will advise you from the initial briefing onward.
